IntroducingDavid Pearson


P. David Pearson is the co-director of CIERA with Elfrieda H. Hiebert and Connie Juel. He is the John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor of Education at Michigan State University where he holds appointments in the Department of Teacher Education and the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Special Education. He received his Ph.D in Education at the University of Minnesota in 1969. Prior to teaching at MSU, he held several positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign including Dean of the College of Education (1989-1995) and Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Reading.

In his current work, Pearson conducts research on reading instruction and reading assessent policies and practices at the local state and national levels. In 1989, the National Reading Conference presented him with the Oscar Causey Award for outstanding contributions to reading research. In 1990 he was honored by the IRA with the William S.Gray Citation for Merit for his contributions to theory, research, and practice.

In addition to his role in the Directorate of CIERA, Pearson is involved in a number of programs, projects and studies in CIERA.
